Managing stress and mental health

Session overview: Role based competencies for managers for working with issues of stress and mental health at work

This workshop is aimed at all leaders and managers within the university who have direct line management responsibility for colleagues.

This is an interactive and operational training workshop for managers to develop skills for following University guidance and supporting teams with issues around stress and mental health. The workshop introduces good practice examples and psychological models for supporting staff wellbeing; utilising case examples to give managers the confidence to effectively handle instances of stress or mental health amongst their team members.

Aim

This workshop will develop leader/manager competence in managing stress and mental health issues at work. Our online course is open to all managers and is repeated several times per academic year. Managers are also welcome to request a team based version of this event for their staff, if appropriate.

Background of this workshop

This workshop used to be a 3-hour workshop delivered by the Integrating Staff Support to Improve Wellbeing at Work (ISSIWAW) group; an interdisciplinary collaboration of professionals and services within the HR Directorate, currently including representatives from HR, ODPL, SCPSS, OH, H&S and EPU, and also trainers from IT and other parts of the university.

Formed in 2015, ISSIWAW recognised there is much to gain from a coordinated approach and collaboration to equip staff to fulfil their management roles in relation to stress and mental health. The course will provide information and develop competence. The focus for this first ISSIWAW intervention is managing stress and mental health related issues.

Small Group Discussion sessions

We have also introduced facilitated small group discussion sessions “Role Based Competencies – In Action” to enable managers to bring their specific issues relating to the management of stress or mental health in the workplace. Express your interest in attending a small group discussion session.
